Habitat for Humanity of Deep East Texas broke ground Thursday on the Denman Heights Subdivision, a Lufkin affordable housing project that could bring up to 10 new homes to the city. It is the organization’s largest single build effort in the area in recent years.
Habitat homes are built with volunteer labor and sold to qualifying families at no profit, with the buyer contributing sweat equity hours during construction. That model keeps monthly payments within reach for households that would otherwise be shut out of ownership.
Lufkin, like much of Angelina County, has seen home prices climb faster than local wages over the past several years. A 10 home subdivision will not close that gap on its own, but it puts real inventory on the ground for working families in the 936.
