Angelina County Sheriff warns of phone scam using Bitcoin kiosks

The Angelina County scam warning is out: Sheriff Tom Selman says his office is seeing a rise in calls from people pretending to be sheriff’s department employees, some steering victims to Bitcoin kiosks to pay bogus fines or missed jury duty.

Selman’s office says no deputy will ever call and demand payment by cryptocurrency, gift card, wire, or any other method. If you get a call like that, hang up and call the Sheriff’s Office directly at the number listed on the Angelina County website.

Anyone who believes they have already sent money should report it to the Sheriff’s Office and to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
