The Big Axe BBQ Competition in Lufkin returned Saturday for its fifth year, with more than 15 teams squaring off at the George H. Henderson Jr. Exposition Center. The event was hosted by the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Ferrara’s Heating and Air Conditioning.
Post Oak Cookers took the grand champion title, and Big Slick Cookers earned reserve champion. Strickland Plumbing HVAC and Electric won best brisket, using American Wagyu prepared with a simple salt and pepper mixture.
Categories judged included brisket, chicken, ribs, and beans. Organizers said proceeds and community support tie back to Chamber programs across Angelina County.
