Room to play: Conroe council approves $275,836 playground for Oscar Johnson center

Conroe City Council on Sept. 24 approved a $275,836.72 proposal from vendor GameTime for new playground equipment at the Oscar Johnson Jr. Enrichment and Recreation Center. Council members approved the proposal without opposition after questioning a smaller replacement plan earlier this summer.

The design covers a play structure for children ages 5 through 12, a three-bay swing set, activity panels, musical instruments and a spinning play feature, along with safety surfacing, drainage work, curbs and a sidewalk, according to the city agenda. Community Development Director Brandy Taylor told the council the design includes a shade canopy and lower-height play features aimed at making more of the playground accessible to children with disabilities, and that textured features were added in response to a resident concern about play options for children with autism.

The approved amount is roughly three times the nearly $90,000 replacement option the council delayed on June 25, when members said the smaller design did not go far enough for the new facility. The vendor has agreed to remove the damaged playground equipment; city staff could not immediately say whether removal is included in the contract or carries a separate cost.
