Anyone in the Jasper area who wants to break into construction can enroll in a free eight-week carpentry course that pays trainees during the hands-on part.
Lamar State College Port Arthur is running an NCCER Core and Level 1 Carpentry program in partnership with Associated Builders and Contractors and Gated Rentals Home Assembly. Classes meet Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with five hours of classroom instruction and five hours of hands-on training each day. Trainees earn 12 dollars an hour during the on-the-job portion. The program is held at Gated Rentals, 1745 Highway 63 East in Jasper.
The curriculum covers framing, roof and floor systems, wall systems, basic stairs, building envelopes and reading construction plans. The program flyer carries a QR code for registration for upcoming classes.
