Life Jackets, Sober Drivers, and a Safe 936 Labor Day

50 Texans didn’t come home from the water last year. Let’s not add to that number this weekend.

Labor Day is one of the busiest weekends on Lake Livingston, Sam Rayburn and Dam B, and Texas game wardens will be out in force. Here’s what the numbers say actually keeps people alive (Texas Parks & Wildlife, 2025):

  • 84% of people who died in a boating accident last year were NOT wearing a life jacket. Wear it. Not stow it. Wear it.
  • 7 out of 10 boating deaths were drownings, not crashes. Sober swimmers drown too, especially after dark.
  • Game wardens made 223 BWI arrests last year. A boat DWI is the same jail, same lawyer, same record as one in your truck.

Have a blast out there, 936. Life jacket on, sober driver for the boat AND the ride home, and tell somebody when you’ll be back.
