Two elementary campuses could trigger a Nacogdoches ISD state takeover if performance ratings do not improve within the next year. Mike Moses Elementary and Brook Quinn Jones Elementary have each received failing grades for four consecutive years, and a fifth consecutive failing rating at either campus would trigger state intervention under Texas Education Agency rules, even if the district’s overall grade remains passing.
Superintendent Grey Burton acknowledged the district “took our eye off the ball for a minute” and said improvements are already underway. The district has adopted the Bluebonnet curriculum, launched real-time student progress tracking, and held district-wide strategic planning meetings.
About 79 percent of Nacogdoches ISD students qualify as economically disadvantaged, and 72 percent are identified as at-risk for dropping out. “By the end of this next year, we will be exactly where we need to be,” Burton said.
