A push to let voters decide the future of the Conroe Flock cameras stalled Thursday night when the city council came up short of the three votes needed to place a binding proposition on the November ballot.
Flock Safety license plate readers automatically photograph passing vehicles and check the plates against law enforcement databases. Supporters point to solved cases. Critics raise questions about how long the data is kept and who can search it.
Council Member John Sellars warned that advancing the measure without the required petition signatures could set a slippery slope for future ballot questions. Council Member Shana Arthur and Council Member Hairel were the only members who supported putting it before voters.
The cameras stay in place for now. Residents who want the question revisited would need to work through the standard petition process.
