Montgomery County public health officials have confirmed the county’s first West Nile virus death of 2026. The victim was a Conroe woman in her 90s who lived in the 77304 ZIP code and was diagnosed with West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease, the most serious form of the illness.
Officials said mosquito season in Texas typically runs May through October, and this year got off to an earlier and worse start than any season in more than two decades. Residents were urged to drain standing water, wear EPA-registered repellent, and cover up around dawn and dusk when the Culex mosquitoes that carry the virus are most active.
Trapping and testing continue across Montgomery County and neighboring counties. Anyone experiencing sudden high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, or confusion after a mosquito bite should contact a health care provider.
