Trinity County Burn Ban Takes Effect October 27 — Up to $500 in Fines

Trinity County Commissioners Court has issued a burn ban that took effect today, October 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., prohibiting outdoor burning in all unincorporated areas of the county. The Trinity County Sheriff’s Office announced the order through a public safety advisory, citing dry conditions and an increased risk of wildfires.

The ban remains in effect for up to 90 days unless the Commissioners Court lifts it earlier. Residents who violate the order can be charged with a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500.

What’s prohibited

  • Burning brush piles
  • Open burning of leaves and yard debris
  • Land clearing fires
  • Any other unauthorized outdoor burning

What’s still allowed

Burn barrels for household trash are still permitted when all three conditions are met:

  • The enclosure has a screen
  • An adult 18 or older is present at all times
  • A water source is within 10 feet

Outdoor cooking is also still allowed. Contained grills and fire pits may be used with a water source nearby, and coals and ashes must be fully extinguished with water after cooking.

Certain agricultural, utility, firefighter training, and certified prescribed burning activities are exempt under the order.

Why the ban is in place

The Sheriff’s Office pointed to current dry conditions as the trigger, noting that volunteer fire departments across Trinity County work hard to protect communities and residents from preventable fires. Residents are asked to use common sense, exercise caution, and share the burn ban with neighbors.
